MandelaDay 2016 18/07/2016
Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July. It was inspired by Madiba’s call to the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices. It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
In the words of Madiba, “it is in your hands now”.
ELRU (The Early Learning Resource Unit in Lansdowne) ventured to the Phandulwazi Community Hall, in the heart of Langa. We met our Family and Community Motivators (FCM fieldworkers and Hlumisas (Playgroup mothers) and children as well as local mothers and their children. The ELRU team arrived with soup and bread as well as take home packs full of delicious goodies. Mandela Day 2016 was proudly sponsored by two of ELRU’s Development Partners: The Rolf-Stephan Nussbaum Foundation and JAM (Joint Aid Management SA).
JAM SA ensured the kids in ELRU’s Langa programme were spoilt with takkies as gifts – the children brought their reusable bowls that is JAM’s donation in which to serve the daily porridge for the children’s nutrition which is JAM’s ongoing nutritional support to all ELRU’s projects.
The Rolf-Stephan Nussbaum Foundation donated carpets for 40 playgroups, along with soap, facecloths and toilet rolls for the 240 children.
We thank them for their ongoing support. The day was filled with dancing, singing, laughs and, most importantly, smiles.
We thank all the ELRU staff involved as well as our Funders for allowing us to continue the amazing work that ELRU does.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela"
